This is a phrase that either can drive you crazy or you figure out what it’s all about and use it to reach your goals.
“But what’s this got to do with darts or darts training?” a few of you probably wonder. The direct answer is EVERYTHING!
If you really want to reach your goals and dreams, you better start take a look at yourself, your self-concept, attitude, and identity.

“Are you a person that will succeed or a person who’s lacking the grit to do what it takes? Are you a fighter or a quitter?”

Who are you at the oche? Understanding your self-concept
Have you ever wondered why some players stay calm after a bad leg while others let one missed dart ruin an entire match? The answer often lies in something called self-concept.

Your self-concept is the picture you have of yourself. It is the story you tell yourself about who you are as a player. Are you a fighter who never gives up? A player who performs under pressure? Or someone who starts doubting their ability after a few mistakes? The interesting thing is that your self-concept influences how you react to different situations on the dartboard.

When you win, do you see it as proof that your hard work is paying off, or do you think you were simply lucky? When you lose, do you view it as an opportunity to learn, or as evidence that you’re not good enough?

Players with a strong and healthy self-concept understand that results do not define them. A great match does not make them a great person, and a poor match does not make them a poor player. They focus on the process, their effort, and their development.

The next time you play a match, pay attention to your inner dialogue. How do you react after a missed double? How do you respond when your opponent throws a big score? Those reactions reveal a lot about your self-concept.

Remember: confidence is not believing you’ll win every match. Confidence is believing you’ll be okay regardless of the result and that you’ve prepared and done what you can before the match, to give you the best chance to win.

The player you become is shaped not only by the darts you throw, but by the story you tell yourself after every throw.

Attitude – How you handle the ups and downs of darts

Your attitude as a darts player plays a huge role in how you perform, especially when the pressure starts to build. Every player will face missed doubles, frustrating visits, and opponents who suddenly can’t stop hitting big scores. What matters is how you respond.

Handle pressure like a challenge

Pressure is part of the game. The best players don’t try to avoid it – they learn to embrace it. A little adrenaline can sharpen your focus and help you perform at your best when the match is on the line. That’s one of the reasons that it is important to regularly practise under pressure. That will make you get used to the situation and learn how to make the most out of it.

Focus on the next dart

No matter how experienced you are, mistakes will happen. You’ll miss doubles. You’ll throw poor visits. You’ll lose matches you felt you should have won. A game you were way in front of your opponent suddenly turns to an even game.
A strong darts attitude means accepting what happened, letting it go, and putting all your attention on the next dart.

Stay positive during tough matches

Your mindset can either help you recover or pull you deeper into frustration. Players who stay positive and solution-focused are far more likely to bounce back after setbacks and finish matches strongly.

Win with humility, lose with class

Attitude isn’t only about how you react to your own darts. It’s also about how you treat opponents, teammates, and fellow players. Respecting others, staying composed, and showing good sportsmanship are qualities that define great darts players both on and off the oche.

At the end of the day, attitude is a choice. Every visit to the board gives you a new opportunity to respond positively, stay focused, and become a stronger player.

Your Darts Identity

Every darts player develops an identity. Some see themselves as competitors, others as students of the game, and some thrive on performing under pressure. Unlike many sports that rely heavily on physical strength and endurance, darts is a unique blend of precision, technique, focus, and mental control.
You’ve probably heard it many times from different players or coaches, that darts is 95% a mental sport. So make sure to work on your mental strength as well.

The strongest players build a self-concept based on trust in their ability. They know they have put in the work, they trust the process, built up good habits, repeated the fundamentals thousands of times, and followed and developed routines they can rely on when the pressure rises. We’ve mentioned it before – practise makes permanent! This confidence isn’t wishful thinking. It comes from preparation. When everything clicks, when you’re in the zone, players often enter a flow state where throwing feels natural and automatic.

Your darts identity also shapes how you respond to setbacks. Missed doubles, poor scoring visits, and tough losses are part of the game. Build up strong and healthy self-concept and don’t let a bad leg define you. Instead, look at challenges as temporary obstacles, learn from them, and quickly refocus on the next dart, the next leg, and the next opportunity.

And don’t forget: Enjoy your darts and make it count!
