If you watched the PDC World Darts Championship, you’ve seen how top players punish every chance, especially with sharp two-dart finishes from 90 and below. That “pop-pop” efficiency doesn’t come from just playing endless 501s. It comes from focused checkout training, where every opportunity to finish counts.
First of all, if you are new to darts you have to work hard on the basics. Are your darts slipping in to the 5 and 1 segement to often, or even worse, 18 and 12? Then you should put in a lot of focused training to get the mechanics right.
Or as the famous basket ball player Michael Jordan once said:
”You can practice shooting eight hours a day, but if your technique is wrong, then all you become is very good at shooting the wrong way. Get the fundamentals down and the level of everything you do will rise.”
If you still are uncertain, look up a local darts coach or online darts coach and do some dedicated training with the coach to get the basics right. More and more darts coaches now also use GoDartsPro as a tool for coaching their players. This way you can continue to practise on GoDartsPro and your darts coach will be able to analyse your training stats, and provide you with custom training plans.
If you don’t have any darts coach to contact, send an email to info@godartspro.com and I’ll connect you with one.
People pay €€€ to get a Personal Trainer for working out in a gym but still too many darts players doesn’t contact a darts coach to work on their throw. If you are dedicated and serious about darts, this is something we highly recommend.
When we’re watching the games at home or at the venue, we all want to see the big 3-dart-combinations like 170, 167 or 132, but as a player your main focus is to win the match. So what should we practise to win more legs?
Of course, to get down to a finish, you have to be able to score heavily or the oppenent will be down to a finish before you’re even at 170.
So what to practise to become a good scorer?
You need to throw straight (hit the 20 segment)
You have to be able to group the darts and keep the hit area tight
You need to be able to switch targets when your main target is blocked
For scoring-training there are many different games you can use. Short games like Jackpot, Streak or pure scoring games like High-Score or Dedication should be on your daily/weekly list of games. You need to practise to score good, throw after throw, and a good way is to find fun games to do this and to monitor your improvement. Play the High-Score game several times per month, month after month, and you can monitor your progress with the stats in the game.
One of the most common problem for darts players is the ability to throw the darts straight.
First dart might go into the number 5 field and then you overcompensate and the next one goes into number 1. Feels familiar? Again, look up a darts coach and let them watch you throw. There might be minor things to adjust, like the elbow or the release, to get your darts more straight.
You can also set up a camera, like a smart phone with slow motion option to watch your throw from different angles. Do this regularly and try to do minor adjustments at a time to see how it changes your darts in the board.
You can also nail a string from Double 20 hanging down over the board, over the bullseye and down to Double 3. Then aim for the string and try to hit it repeatedly.
Play the game Align on GoDartsPro to work on throwing your darts straight from Double 20 down to Double 3 and back again.
For training to group the darts there are some really good games on GoDartsPro, like A1, Mikko’s Megatrain, For Four, Big Singles, and Even Flow. Try these games with their different options to find games that feels inspiring, but yet challenges you during your training session.
When it comes to switching there are two games that stands out. The first and best in my opinion is the PowerSwitch game with the Bundle option. This will promote when you hit a big treble to let you continue to focus on the target, and try to hit it no matter how blocked the treble can be. Sometimes when playing 501’s your only chance to leave a finish is to hit a certain treble, even if it is blocked by previous darts.
Then on the scoring throw, you have the pressure to score good to mirror your first good switching score.
The 2nd game is the SwitchBlade. A short and effective game that you should use daily.
When it comes to practise 2-darts-finishes there are some really good games as well. First the Checkout Challenge, where the default option starts at 21 and you throw for 20 minutes. If you finish the 21 score your next checkout is 31. If you miss 31, you go down one and 30 is your next checkout. You’ll try to finish as high checkout as possible in 20 minutes. It is a great game to also use regularly.
Other games like Catch 40, Finishing star, Finishing Range, Matchplay Checkouts, Stars & Stripes, Finish & Lock etc are also good games to use daily.
One of all advantages of GoDartsPro are all the leaderboards. Find one or two for your favourite games and work hard to reach the leaderboards. For example, the Checkout Challenge. If you haven’t yet tried it, play it once and try to reach the leaderboard. If you can’t, try to beat your best score.
When you’re at the leaderboard, focus on the score above you in the leaderboard, and try to beat it. When you do, take some rest. You’ve deserved it.
